Surround yourself with the right people, who are doing the right things, for the right reasons.
In this episode of “The Journey of my Mother’s Son” podcast, I had the opportunity talk with another long-time friend, Jeff Potter.
I’ve known Jeff for over 12 years now. We first met shortly after he had published his first book, “Whatever Happened to Baseball.” We share the same philosophy of teaching life lessons and giving back through the game of baseball. I was in the midst of writing my first book, “The Beauty of a Diamond, through the eyes of a Coach.” when Jeff and I met. He was a big reason as to why I got it to the finish line and published, I had been working on it for years and no one other than my wife and mom knew that I was writing it, he challenged me to start telling everyone that I was writing a book. When I asked him why, He simply told me that if I did that, then the people who I told would hold me accountable to get it finished because they’d ask me about the progress every time that we’d see each other.
I followed his advise and he was right. I published in 2012.
Jeff now runs the Potter Baseball Tour, in which he takes a group of young people on a 30 day field trip across the Mid-Atlantic region playing barnstorming baseball games and giving back to the communities in which they visit. The is based on baseball, but is about so much more than baseball. The tour teaches those who participate in it the values of discipline, dedication and commitment to others.
He has written two additional books since we met, “Saving Baseball” and “Far from being Done.”
