In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother’s Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Dave Combs.

A native of Erwin, Tennessee, Dave grew up in a family that enjoyed making music. Both of his parents and his grandmother Combs played the piano, which began his musical journey that included being a church choir director and pianist.

After college, Dave moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he served as Minister of Music at a church while working as a computer programmer at a Fortune 500 company.

Dave is a songwriter, photographer, entrepreneur and author with four decades of experience writing over 120 songs and creating fourteen albums of soothing, relaxing instrumental piano music. His songwriting began with the now popular standard, Rachel’s Song. His soothing, relaxing music has been played millions of times worldwide on radio, satellite, and all internet streaming media and it continues to touch the lives of millions of people all over the world. He is also the author of the bestselling new book, Touched By The Music: How the Story and Music of Rachel’s Song Can Change Your Life.

I always love talking to musicians, regardless of their genre.  I love all types of music and I believe that genres are just another unnecessary label that society uses to make us think that we’re different.  Dave’s music is incredibly beautiful and I really enjoyed talking to him about how music truly can touch us and change our lives.

His story of how he used a grass-roots marketing campaign in the 1980’s to get his music into gift shops in tourist towns all across the United States is truly an amazing tale of grit and determination.  It shows you just what can happen when you put the work into following your passion.
