Lois Letchford – How We Learn

In this episode of the Journey of My Mother’s Son podcast, I talk with Lois Letchford.

Lois is the author of the book, “Reversed: A Memoir,” which chronicles an extraordinary journey of overcoming daunting odds, offering inspiration and hope to parents and educators navigating desperate situations. At the age of 39, while teaching her second son how to read, she stumbled upon her own “learning difference,” an unexpected revelation that ignited an unwavering pursuit for answers.

With sheer determination and unyielding resilience, she confronted challenges and battled self-doubt head-on, proving that no obstacle is insurmountable. Through relentless effort, she witnessed the transformative power of perseverance, achieving significant milestones and experiencing profound personal growth.

She discovered the immense value of trusting her instincts. This experience led to her appreciating literacy learning as being more than a “set of skills to acquire.”  Embracing foundational knowledge of “how children and adults learn,” and adopting a growth mindset, she unlocked true potential, shattering self-limiting beliefs.

Three Years

Three years ago today, Sandy, Youk, and I set out on this crazy full-time RV journey.

Since that time, we’ve been to 43 states and a little piece of Canada.  We have traveled over 56,000 miles, and made countless new friends and memories.  We’ve been awed by God’s beautiful creation time and time again.  We have visited family and friends that we hadn’t seen in years.  We have also made sure to get back to see our family and friends that we had left back in Pennsylvania often.

Dr. James Perdue – Professor of Perseverance

At age sixteen, James Perdue had to grow up fast after his father died. Concerned about his mother and brothers, he hoped his athletic talent would lead to a financially successful professional baseball career. He attended Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee on a baseball scholarship. With the attitude of being invincible, he was in college for two weeks and played one college game in the fall. Then unexpected tragedy came a-calling.

On September 11, 1983, James became a quadriplegic, dislocating three vertebrae in his neck, from playing a casual football game. The doctor said, “James, I’m sorry. You’ll never walk again and you might be paralyzed from your neck down.” Later, the doctor advised his family to place him in a nursing home; he would be too much of a burden for them to care for.

Taralyn Michelle – The Ultimate Release – Clearing mind, body, and spirit

“One of the most valuable lessons I have learned throughout my journey is much of what proves to be challenging in life has little to do with what we don’t know.

Yes, there is always knowledge and information that can help get us closer to where we want to be. Still, without having a method to not only apply the information/knowledge that is repeatable, flexible for growth, and makes accountability natural, many won’t succeed.

My style of teaching is all about seeing the lighter side of challenges. Audiences leave with valuable tools and a fresh outlook on difficult issues. Adversity, failure, embarrassment, self- doubt/hate, etc. serve a valuable purpose in attaining greatness!

I believe much of what we all need we have inside us. My mission is to teach audiences how to create environments within their mind and body that attract what will strengthen and not weaken.

With a solid foundation for life, the tools to maintain the environment of mind and body, and a dose of humor scaling your life becomes as natural as breathing.”
